Happy New Year!
A new year always feels like a fresh start, doesn’t it? It’s such a good time to take stock of your business, strategies, and evaluate what’s working and what’s NOT. Before we look at 2023 social media trends and what to lean into on social media to achieve real results in upcoming posts, let’s start with a fave topic: unpopular opinions.
We, the founders of MILA, have been in the marketing game for almost 30 years collectively, and as true digital marketing experts it’s time to bust some social media marketing myths. It can be pretty easy to just continue doing what you’ve always done, but it’s time for some REAL TALK.
Focusing on growing your community is more valuable than simply growing your followers on Instagram or TikTok. You might be wondering, what’s the difference? We always say to go deep instead of wide to authentically grow your following and more importantly, the action your followers take. When you focus on creating quality content for your current followers, they’re more likely to share, comment and engage with your posts, which will in turn lead to your content being shown to a wider audience, and ultimately help you grow.
Taking a break from social media could decrease your reach upon your return, but you know what really decreases your reach? Burning out and putting out mediocre content that doesn’t convert. It’s so much better to take some time to re-group and get inspired than being forced into a break you can’t bounce back from. Running a successful business is important, but not at the expense of your physical/mental health. Fun fact: resources coming soon to help you batch create your social media content so that social media marketing can work for you even when you’re not.
You can’t do it ALL, and if you’re trying to do all the things, you’re going to burn out faster! This will not only impact your creativity but it will affect other areas of your business if you’re unable to show up fully as the CEO/visionary/creative director that you need to be! We advise to invest in good help that specializes in content creation, social media management and/or administrative help to take tasks off your plate to give more time for your marketing efforts. We recommend letting the pros help you do it easier and faster rather than the time consuming trial and error method, which then allows you to oversee at a more strategic level.
Okay, we bet this is a VERY unpopular opinion because most entrepreneurs want to get ALL the social media tips! However, getting too much advice can be overwhelming and sometimes contradictory. In some cases, it can lead to confusion and overthinking resulting in analysis paralysis AKA not posting at all! SO we recommend choosing only a few high value educator accounts that align with your goals. Declutter your feed from clickbait that keeps you in an unsatisfied scroll. Your own metrics tell a story so look inward to see what is getting you results as opposed to confusing your strategy jumping from gimmick to gimmick with no real lasting success.
How you communicate the value of your content is more important than the look of the overall feed. When someone lands on your profile, you want them to hit follow, but it’s less about the vibe of your grid , and more about how you’re communicating what your content is about. You’ll want to make it easy for potential followers to scan your content to see if it resonates with and provides value to them. So we recommend creating consistent Reel or TikTok covers, adding text overlay to images and using graphics when necessary. And while an aesthetic feed is not the goal, it’s about how someone views your feed at a glance so you’ll want to create some “negative space” by breaking up all the graphics. Check out an example from our Instagram feed:
To sum it up, in 2023 a few simple mindset shifts can help you get the most out of social media marketing for your business. Adopting the unpopular opinions we’ve shared can help you take the stress out of social media and focus on creating valuable content that will not only help you grow your following, but your business as well.
