Currently #1 in Lifestyle on the U.S. App Store, Lemon8 is the new social media platform created by ByteDance, yes, the same company who owns TikTok. Lemon8โs name is, to us, a play on the word lemonade. Because when life gives TikTok lemons, or, ahem, congress hearings (IYKYK)… sour indeed ๐
You may have seen some of your fave influencers talking about the Lemon8 with the hope that early adoption will pay off for their follower numbers should the app blow up. Especially on TikTok, Influencers have been pushing the app, leaving us to wonder if they are undisclosed ads, or just genuine excitement (or perhaps, a bit of both).
๐ Itโs been described as the love child of Instagram and Pinterest, but we also see it as a micro blogging platform, too!
๐ Graphics and creativity on the images is encouraged
๐ There is video capability too, but itโs not as widely used. Leaning into video might be the move if youโre on the app
๐ You can easily browse by categories in the top nav menu
๐ Classic โFor Youโ TikTok set up with the For You Page being the homepage, delivering content from people you donโt necessarily follow, but the algorithm thinks you want to see
๐ Longer form content and captions are encouraged: think lessons, guides and value
๐ Aimed primarily at creators for now, big opportunity for brands down the road
๐ Each piece of content you upload to the app is branded with a watermark in the bottom left hand corner – this is a classic TikTok move that was said to be helpful in the quick uptick of the appโs popularity
๐ Released in the U.S. app store in March 2023, and so far, not available to download in Canada (le sigh)
